Looks like pssl.com is selling Technics 1200 models for less than $500. A Gemini, Stanton or Numark turntable is a little bit less but would probably also fit the bill quite well.

Spend another $100 on a cartridge+stylus and be good to go.

I just want something that can play records and that I can hook up to a headphone amp. I dont need a set of turntables. I am not trying to get into djing.

And thanks for the offer but I can get those for almost the same price somewhere on the internet.

If you're going to get a turntable get the technics 1200, any model. They will last FOREVER.

Universally praised audiophile TT is Rega P3 or P24-same model newer iteration. It comes with the best tonearm in the business. Used it is well within your range.

ghulkhan,

There are also issues around Moving Magnet versus Moving Coil and LP accessories. You probably want Moving Magnet ("MM") in this range.

Be glad to help out on these issue. I just got back into LPs two years ago so I can help you avoid the pitfalls.

If you can stretch your budget a bit, I'd say look hard on ebay, audiogon, etc for deals on the Mitchell Tecnodec. The weak pound might also help you out if you decide to buy new, maybe. Although the Tecnodec is very much the entry-level - I use the Orbe - I still think it delivers on what I love about their turntables, which is the combination of art and function, which is let's face it, a complimentary factor in vinyl listening these days. You will need some other bits & bobs to go with it - preamps, etc depending on your headphone amp. In the US, http://www.ttvj.com/ is probably the place to go for this sort of stuff - although they don't carry Mitchell.

Someone just gifted me some Grado GS-1000 and a Cayin headphone tube amp....

i am planning to use it with those...

so I want something that wont necessarily undermine the capabilities of those two things...

so I want something in decent price range, around 1k...

anyone care to point out which is probably the best to use with the other gear I have with the tables listed?

You did really well then as the GS1000 is one of the reference cans these days. The Cayin is superb as well.

I would also highly recommend the VPI Scout. MusicDirect has them on special for $1,399 which is a bit more than your range but loads better than the Rega. I have the VPI Scoutmaster, the next model up. Lots of upgrades possible as well. Regularly mentioned as one of the best value tables.

In your price range, the Rega P3/RB300 combo is the no-brainer (even better in lime green).

Brings back memories of my pre-digital days when I spent waaaay too much of my limited income on audio equipment...my first turntable was a Rega P2 with a Stax UA-7 carbon fibre tonearm & a moving coil set up. Always had a soft spot for Rega, as a budget product. Still do...almost forgot my current cd player is a Rega.

Another $1k budget consideration I should mention is the Clearaudio Emotion turntable, Satisfy tonearm, and Aurum Classics Wood cartridge combo.
