Ok, so I have decided on a new navy suit. I have som preferences; for example I need it to be a suit with a trimmer fit and it has to be a solid navy. Some fine italian fabric would be nice too. Although I have a limited budget: $600.

What are my best options regarding quality, fit and appearence for something around $600?

There is no rush. Thanks for your advice. Do you guys have any experience with j crew suiting? I'm thinking about the ludlow suit.

J Crew suits are on a whole lower level than most of the suits discussed on this site. Sometimes you can find a fashion suit that looks good immediately, but I don't think the J Crew suits even look fashionable. Check them out in person and you'll see what I mean.

Go with what HarveyBirdman suggested.

The thing is I don't think the Milano fit is slim enough. I have a pair BB Milano chinos but what I am looking for in a suit is a slightly slimmer fit.

Agreed. I wear RLBLs and they are just what you're looking for; slim and modern but not so extreme that they'll look stupid once slim is out and Tom Ford swank is in. Great fit, nice cloth, and fully canvassed.

Go to a RL mansion and try one on.

I just got my Hickey suit in the mail yesterday and I must say, I am extremely happy with it. I got it off GILT and right now there's a solid navy worsted wool Hickey still on sale for $450. The fit is slim, slimmer than the Ludlow (I also have a J Crew Ludlow and I'm kinda regretting buying it, it's an okay suit, but for the price of a Ludlow, I would have waited on Gilt to get me a Hickey). If you're not too familiar with Hickey, do a search on this forum.

This is a very good idea, especially if you're a 38.

Why especially if he's a 38?

The few Hickey Freeman suits I tried on while suit shopping all fit rather boxy and big in the shoulders on me.

I'm not too sure about Hickey Freeman suits. I've never tried them on myself personally. The Hickey suit I recommended is "Hickey" brand, not "Hickey Freeman." From my understand, Hickey is a spin-off of Hickey Freeman made for a more modern slim fitting look. Quality wise, I've heard rumblings from people on this forum that it's not top notch like Hickey Freeman (Half Canvased vs Full Canvased). To me, it fits great, looks great, feels great. I'm happy with my purchase. It's actually such a great fit on me, I'm debating on even taking it in for waist suppression or not.

Interesting - I'll have to look around to see if I can find that particular model. Half canvassed is fine with me if I can actually find a good fit.

If you normally fit slim fitting suits, Hickey is great! I just tried on the suit again today to see how much I need to tailor it...and honestly, I think it fits almost perfect off the rack. When I was researching the brand, most said the attention to detail and quality is on par with the parent Hickey Freeman brand, except that it's half canvased (which I don't really mind at all either).
