Ok, so this will be my first sportcoat purchase. I am going to wear it with jeans and a v-neck underneath...I know absolutely nothing about sizes so I will definitely get it tailored. I am 20 years old and turn 21 in a few weeks and cant wait to start going to upscale clubs. 5'10 185 lbs athletic build. im posting some prospective purchases, let me know what you think, if u dont like them, then give me some good suggestions

Don't get one containing polyester. Also I would recommend a navy blue over black.

just buy a good quality, close fitting v-neck and wear it without the jacket
your muscular build will look a lot better in a v-neck, in the context of a nightclub
combine with dark jeans and expensive dress shoes

polyester breathes badly, i.e., makes you sweat when its hot, and doesn't keep you warm when its cold

Experience tells me that wearing expensive dress shoes would be a mistake. Somehow a drink will always get spilled, a girl's heel will scratch the upper or you'll do it yourself lying face down on the floor of the afterparty.

Might I recommend a pair of mid-priced chelsea boots and leaving your best footwear for non-contact heavy activities.

I dunno, IMO that shirt's pretty disgusting. If you like dressing up, why not wear a full suit with an open shirt?

Why don't you walk into your nearest luxury department store and browse? Like you said, you're going to have to try this stuff to see how it fits.

Also, it's hard to make suggestions without knowing what your budget is & roughly where you live.

Well, he did specifically say upscale nightclubs; but I suppose you're right, it would be practical to wear cheaper shoes if you expect things to get messy.

ok, i live in Nashville, TN, so when i say upscale, it isnt like LA, or Miami at all, we dont even have a clubbing scene its mainly just bars. my budget is relatively low since i am a college student..no more than $200 for a sportcoat, no more than $150 for jeans, and $150 for shoes...

not wearing a full suit

Yes. Wool, it wears better, is more comfortable, generally looks better. Of the ones you listed, if it looks good on you, the DKNY. Nobody on SF is going to approve of a black jacket, but for your purposes, it's OK. A very dark blue would be more versatile if you were going to end up wearing it for other occasions. http://andersonlittle.com/ for instance, just have the buttons changed to something not metal. Make sure it fits through the shoulders. The chest can be altered, the waist can be altered. The shoulders are what they are. Basically, the seams for the armhole should hit just about on the point where you shoulder turns into your arm. You should be able to button it without sucking in your gut. The vents, single center or double side, should not pull open when you are standing normally. The whole thing should have enough room so you can put a wallet or phone in your inside pocket and not have the thing bulge terribly. At places like Macy's, the sales guy is likely to tell you that a potato sack look great, and a spandex top that is 2 sizes too small fits you perfectly, so, you know, take their advice with a grain of salt. But do have them measure you to get a good idea of the correct size. The same size in different brands, or different models of the same brand, may fit very differently.
