Hey,

I'm new to the whole blazers thing, and would like to start off on the right foot. Could anyone recommend me some good blazer brands and some sites to buy them from?

And if you live in NYC... some places to shop around?

I'm looking for blazers that are $150 and less mostly.

Please help! I'm kind of lost right now.

Thanks.

First, all the usual caveats: what's a "good blazer" for you may depend on your body shape, what your expectations are regarding how it will hold up in what circumstances, how much your participating in the forum will eventually cause you to be somehow vaguely dissatisfied with clothing that 98% of other men would find to be totally acceptable, etc.

That being said, my personal recommendation would involve checking out a store such as Syms, during their semi-annual "Bash" sale (typically around the President's Day holiday) where you can try on a variety of blazers from different makers to see which would work best for you. For around $100 or so you can probably find something such as an Emanual Ungaro that will be perfectly adequate to get you started.

In addition to what PitAronin said, I would add:

In terms of retail stores, you could try the usual suspects of Target, H&M, and Zara. These would help you try some things on and know both your sizes and the kind of style you might like. And, they would be in your price range.

A decent brand to get you started might be Joseph Abboud. The quality isn't bad for the price, the fit is decent, and you can often find them on ebay quite reasonably (well under $150). And, it is something that you can wear in many situations (it's not too fashion forward to be worn to work, not so boring that you couldn't wear it out). If you really start getting into menswear, you'll find that Abboud is about as exciting as a Buick Regal, but nevertheless for starting out you could do MUCH worse.

And, remember... a conservative, versatile Abboud that fits you well for $150 is going to look INFINITELY better than a $1700-marked-down-to-$150 Versace or Prada (or Kiton or Brioni) that nobody else wanted to buy and is two sizes too big. Don't get influenced by advertising blitzes or over-eager sales associates and get wrapped up in a label... learn from my mistakes in that regard!

I would try Syms, they usually have a good selection of Abbouds and HSM, which are not the best but for $120-180, they are worth the money, IMHO.
