Thinking about an IWC 3533-01.

I know nothing about watches, but I like the look and the price is about right (available online for around 2K).

Any discussion for/against is appreciated. Help with where to buy would be helpful, too.

TIA

It's a fine choice though the Portofino series does not get a lot of WIS love for some reason.

You should also look at Nomos, as they offer similar design at comparable price point as well as a more interesting movement. If you can find a Zenith Elite in your price range, maybe from a couple of seasons ago you should check them out as well.

I got an IWC as my first main watch. Really like it. Only idiots buy Rolex.

What do you want the watch for? Sportswear? Business dress? Both? I think there are a lot of nice watches available in your price range. Some lesser known companies like Sinn and Stowa make nice watches. IWC is a quality choice, though their penchant for gold contrasting numbers on the watchface is starting to bug me. I am partial to the Sinn Klassik as a "dressy" watch.

I don't agree that only idiots buy Rolex, but I do think that people fail to realize there are a lot of nice alternatives out there. I think an older air-king (before they really fucked up the look of the dial) or explorer make a nice "hybrid" watch, and I think Rolexes are good because they are easy to resell.

For the most versatility look for something with a leather band but a sportier face. I'd stay away from chronographs in your price range.

Solid watch that you shouldn't have any problems with. If you like it then you should get it.

My first watch was a Mickey Mouse one that could sing and dance. I still have it somewhere.

PS. A forum for watch talk isn't a bad idea.

Portofinos do not get love even amongst IWC afficionados, but at the price they're offering and its simple classic design it is definitely not bad. If you like those, then Merry Christmas!

I love the two-tone submariner with the blue dial. Only thing is that everyone has one. OP: take a look at Omega.

This watch is tacky and a non sense (what dork would wear a golden watch to dive?)

Don't buy a new watch.

Don't buy a sport watch as you will need to wear it with business clothes.

Buy a leather strap.

I hope this doesn't overwhelm you... people don't buy Submariner's to wear while diving.

PSHAW! Rolexes don't have the best movements or the best styles (in most cases... but I can't imagine a chronograph I'd rather have than a Daytona) ... but they do hold or increase in value better than any other brand. There is absolutely nothing idiotic about that.

GTFO!!

Next you're going to try and tell me that people aren't using their Breitlings for racing their planes, or their Omegas on the race track.
