Looking for my first suit

OK - maybe not my first suit, but the first one I have needed to buy as an adult (30's). I like emergent styles and was tempted to go Banana Republic but while the styles appeal to me, the construction I have heard is inferior. I need a suit that will hold up to every day use, and am open to 2-piece or 3-piece, preferably below $500. I saw a Chaps 2-piece suit at Kohl's in a light gray/tan that I felt good in - but was uncertain about the quality or even what to look for.

Perhaps pertinent - therefore I'll mention it - this is for an interview and possible hire as a financial consultant, so a conservative streak is important. But I don't want to be a dark pinstriped clone.

Any comments welcome - and I'm sure I may have missed an important thread or two or twelve on the topic so links to other discussions might also help.

Thanks!

Hi Lee,
Welcome to the forum. My best advice is this - take a little time to read around the forum, look at the what are you wearing pictures, learn about different cuts/style and price ratios. Within even a few hours you should get a pretty good idea of where to start.

Go to some stores and ignore the sales people. Just fit on a huge RANGE of suits in terms of price, cuts/styles, etc and get a sense for what's out tehre.

Once you feel confident that you understand the basics of what a good suit is made of and what it should look like, and ideally some sense of what it's worth (optional), then when you get one, post pictures to get feedback. The buy and sell section around here has some amazing stuff, but I'd say avoid at first until you really know your measurements and fit preferences.
Be prepared for a bit of a thick skin too.

Good luck

For quality reasons alone, no Chaps, please. Probably not Banana Republic, either. Location? With your measurements, two-button ought to work. Don't bother with a three-piece suit.
