Looking for advice from Porsche owners...

    Fast google search shows about $5,000 for rebuilt engine, on a few sites I clicked (how reliable IDK)... Probably even cheaper from a good salvage yard, by my parents house we had a really nice one that would warranty the engines if running with good compression for 3 months. None of the engines cost more then $1,500, most runners was $500-800. But this is only good affordable if you could replace the engine and in a Porsche this maybe hard.

    a porsche aint a chevy malibu mang...
    putting in salvage yard motors in porsches and exotics is like real ghetto
    its like i wanna punch some one when they even put regular in a bimmer...
    its like you drop 50gs on a car and cant afford 20 cents extra on premium?

    I don't really consider a Boxster exotic and there's nothing wrong with putting salvage motors in cars. More so if its not some special or limited run car you intend to drive...

    Boxsters are pretty much the best handling cars in the world. Just a little down on power, but that is Porsche's strategy for protecting the 911. Otherwise a cheaper Boxster would put a 911 in the weeds

    Get the latest one with direct injection; even a Spyder if you can afford it.

    I would gladly own a Boxster, and I own two classic air-cooled jobs.

    i mean... if my m5 blows the motor... i'll just send it to a tuner shop and have forged internals built in ...
    im not throwing in another piece of shit engine ... thats just doesnt sound right and an M deserves better

    elise? exige? those handle better than coxster/gayman
    but i agree, for what it is.... its a nasty car - as long as OP gets his mind right and gets a newer updated model...
    elise and exige are nice but not daily drivable...
    porsche doesnt matter if its coxster or turbo s... its pretty damn comfortable for daily ... and has room for storage

    An M is somewhat special and a limited run car. E39 for example had an estimated production number if I recall around 20,000? I loved that car, but not sure on exact numbers. But point is not so many of them made, probably 25-35% wrecked by now... But in a car like that, I would keep number matching and have the engine rebuilt. But the Boxtster? I see at least 2-3 a day, pretty sure the production was high on that one. So putting a none number matching engine in a Boxster in my eyes is no big deal.

    I love my '02 XKR. It is a substantial car, but with 370 HP it will move down the road with ease. The plastic part mentioned in a previous thread is the cam chain tensioner. It was plastic up until mid-2001 when it was changed to metal.

    nothing wrong with putting a remanufactured or a low mileage salvage engine in a BMW M, Porsche etc. (unless some rare vintage car)
    you may not have a choice depending on failure mode, such as rod through the block

    my buddy has an Elise (yellow with stripes, anniversary edition or something), nice car, but not much more compared to the Boxster S
    The Porsche can be driven daily, the Lotus is like a go-kart, no 300 mile trips in it for sure, you're glad to get out of it
    the Boxster/cayman are amazing handlers, and the newer ones have good power

    lots of good info here. thanks a ton to everyone. Im really unimpressed with the older boxster. it drove fucking great....faster than i expected, and handled great. but the interior is just ratty. (its a 1998) If i get an older one, it will be a weekend car. Im 99% set on the jag XK8. drove like a fuckin dream. interior is great as well. so, im passing on a porsche until i can afford a new one, or pay cash for an early 2000s one.

    Sounds like a good idea. Even the 987 interior was kinda chintzy. The newest one is pretty damn solid.

    I think for me, the XK8 would get kind of old. A little too long and I'm not 100% keen on the looks but I agree it would probably make for the better daily and if you're happy with the driving dynamics, then get on that!

    im the opposite...ive always loved the XK8 body style...one of my favorite recent model jaguars. The more i talk about it, the more certain i am that ill swing out and pick it up saturday. unless i can get a day off before hand.
