I'm a college student looking for a nice, decently priced suit (navy or charcoal) that I can wear for the next few years. I probably won't wear it that much, mainly just interviews and presentations, so I don't think I need anything fancy. So does anyone know where I can get one cheap in NYC? Also, what should I be looking for/avoiding?

Well, IMO, get something classic, navy should be everyone's first suit. 2 button probably, I prefer a 2 button in an interview. Solid navy, maybe some very faint stripes... but you want a suit that goes with everything at your stage in life.

You've got lots of choices, and it depends on what your version of cheap is, fill us in on your price point and we can probably make some brand suggestions.

Define "nice" and "decently priced." Tons of places in NYC -- you could do anything from Century 21 or Filene's Basement for discounted goods, or to a place like Saks or Brooks Brothers during a fairly regular sale. But we need context.

As for things to avoid, I'd personally recommend a two button with either a single or double vent -- so avoid 3 button (unless it is a 3-roll-2 or 3-roll-2.5) and ventless. I'd also avoid buying anything that fits you too wide in the shoulders or too big in the chest or too long or too short length wise -- all other fit issues can be rectified with tailoring.

Sarcasm only works when the recipient gets the sarcasm -- do we really want this poor kid starting a new thread asking for the name of a good source for Nino Corvato suits?

Seriously though, I think that posters looking for information need to at least make some attempt to define otherwise amorphous terms like "nice" and "decently priced."

You could do a lot worse than an H&M suit for about 250.00.

I'm looking to spend under $300. I have absolutely no idea about any sorts of fabrics and such. I just need something that looks good and would prefer to not have to get any major alterations done.

Jeff, the Wizard of Ahhhs...on ebay gets pretty good reviews on style forum and askandy. Do a ebay search on M. Valentino and email him directly to get a style forum deal. The general consensus is that it's good value for money and certainly better than suits you could get at Men's Warehouse. If you don't like it, you can always return it.
