Looking for a first good pair of brown boots/shoes/something to put on my feet.

Hey guys, I'm not used to all this dressing up, but I'm really looking to get out of the Chucks, Vans, and Dunks scene. I want some versatile brown shoes, that I can use when I dress up, or when I just walk around the city. I would also like a good belt to match with them. Anything you guys have would be very helpful.

Allen-Edmonds bluchers in dark brown. Comfortable, good quality, versatile, affordable, widely available. Many styles can be found for $150 or less on eBay, Sierra Trading Post, etc.

I agree, we need to know a little more about your budget.
ANyway, some suggestions:

RM Williams chelsea or jodphur boots will dress up and down nicely. There are also some nice boots over in the combat boot thread (but most will not necessarily dress up).
Edward Green makes some strikingly nice chukka and city boots. So does Crockett & Jones.
You even have the Charles Tyrwhitt/Lioake option (as long as you go for the calf, NOT the polished leather).
There are also country boots by Grenson (I am biased, I love my pair).

I love the Alden Indy, but I definitely think it's a casual boot. If you're looking for something you can wear with dress clothing, I'd choose something other than (or in addition to) the Indy Boot.

What kind of clothes are these meant to go with?

Sleek, trim clothes or heavier, tweedy, softer stuff? More English or Italian?

Do you want a boot (means socks don't matter so much, but also can't be seen much if you would want to show them) or a shoe?

Depending on how dressed up you want to get with them one the Alden Chukkas may work in cordovan (3 different shades of brown), calfskin, or suede.

What's wrong with trainers and suits? if that's not your thing, try Loakes, they're cool and very stylish.

Make sure the bottom of your trouser leg is wider than the top, unless your a skinny jeans guy.

A great suggestion. These really are terrific, versatile boots, and a good deal if bought from one of the Australian suppliers. But don't pay domestic U.S. prices for them (excepting STP, of course).
