I'm a dependable 40R and right now all I have is a BB cord jacket (it's fine) and a few tweed jacket bought used, most of which do not fit me perfectly. I have an Aquascutum suit which works great.

I'm looking to buy a small number (1-3) of sport coats to wear with semi casual attires (from jeans to gabardine / flannel / moleskin trousers). I need a classic fit for an average body (40" chest, 33" waist). Right now I am looking at Drake's and Paul Stuart, both of which have a few items available on sale in my size, although the Drake's prices are pushing my limits.

I'd like to know if there are other well regarded brands in that bracket (or cheaper if the quality is as good). I'm also curious whether Drake's is worth the premium over PS.

Many thanks!

There are a number of affiliates on SF that I'm sure would be happy to take care of your needs. Perhaps you could post links to some of the jackets you are considering and maybe describe what you like about them. Also, is a full canvas important to you? Do you want something unconstructed? What colors/ patterns/ textures do you want? What are the details that you are looking for with the jackets? More information here would be helpful.

Here are some examples I find interesting:
- https://www.paulstuart.com/shetland-wool-soft-jacket.html
- https://www.paulstuart.com/black-white-herringbone-lambswool-soft-jacket.html
- https://www.paulstuart.com/green-shetland-wool-soft-jacket.html
- https://www.drakes.com/usa/sale/sale-apparel/olive-wool-boucle-jacket
- https://www.drakes.com/usa/sale/sale-apparel/navy-and-wine-houndstooth-harris-tweed-jacket

I'm looking for versatile color & fabrics because I don't need a full range of coats. So I am not looking for bold plaids (muted would be OK, depending), almost certainly in wool rather than linen or cotton. A gray herringbone, donegal, or the like would be nice because it is so versatile. Others could be green, brown, or maybe blue.

I can deal with soft or full canvas. I would very much prefer side vents. I'm not a big fan of leather buttons on tweed jackets, but that's not a deal killer. Quality of fabrics & construction is what I'm most interested in.

I think that you will find that the Paul Stuart selections are for
unconstructed jackets which I believe are inherently cheaper
to make than regular construction and tend not to hang as well after a
time. A "real" Paul Stuart jacket runs much more even on sale:

The Drakes jackets also appear to be unconstructed because no
lining is visible. My personal favorite is a Belvest I bought online
years ago. It has virtually no padding but has conventional canvas
construction and still looks good.

BTW, are you by any chance related to the superb classic French luxury
and sports car company? :

It's hard to say without seeing how the jackets look on you. Different jackets will fit different people differently. The best jacket for you is going to be the one that makes you look your best.
