I've had this nag since the summer started... is it right to wear a long sleeve dressing shirt with shorts? Even if its rolled up to the elbows?

I do, though it looks odd unless you roll up the sleeves. OCBD probably makes it a bit more appropriate. I suspect there are many on this board who will argue against this; they may be right (they also may not own shorts).

I do this all the time, often with linen or casual cotton shirts. I always roll up the sleeves. There is something off to me about a short-sleeve button-up shirt. I do not own any.

My shirtmaker refuses to make short-sleeve shirts

What is a "Dressing shirt"?

There are more informal shirts/style with full sleeves so the material should be the determinant.
