I'm going to a party tonight where the dress code is "london finance", workstyle. I'm not sure exactly what that means, but I'm planning to wear a Charcoal/Light grey pinstriped 2 button suit with black oxfords and either a white, a light lilac or a blue/white pinstriped (much thinner stripes than the suit) shirt. Red/black or blue/white/grey dotted tie.

Do people go dressed like that in london finance circles? What combination of shirts and tie will not fly?

You're going to want to go big, or go home. Pick a couple of elements from this list:

High spread collar
Fat knot
Striped/check shirt, french cuffs- too tight is good, belly is better
Gelled up hair
Pointed shoes.

You're going to a party, so there's some freedom for parody, and at its extremes, the City is full of guido wannabes.

Here's what business shirts look like in Lahndan:

I thought you were joking; then I reflected a bit and remembered that this was a look that I have seen on the occasional British male.

Or perhaps it was a custom tailored shirt whose owner had out on some weight.
