Loden coats: Is there a catch?

Prior to a few days ago, I'd never heard of loden coats, but I've been reading a little about them and they sound great. I may have a chance to look at some in a couple of weeks, but in the meantime, I'm trying to understand why they're not more popular, at least here in the U.S. They're warm (albeit not tremendously so) and water-resistant, so they would seem to be quite functional. Is there some objection to how they look? Are there any other disadvantages that I'm not thinking of?

I had a typical, beautiful loden coat that just wouldn´t quit. I had this thing for ages and finally outgrew it. Never noticed that significant smell you´re talking about, though.

I have a loden coat I bought sometime around 1984 at nominal cost--$65, as I recall. It has given me an incredible amount of service over the years. It was my favorite outergarment for walking my dogs on cold nights, and it is still going strong.

I suppose the major drawback is that they do look, well, very "Mitteleuropa." I can recall going into a convenience store run by Thai-Chinese people that was near my old office to pick up some hot food one rainy day, and the proprietors remarked, "You look like Nazi leader." I think they intended it as compliment. At least I took it that way. Whatever their other shortcomings, the Nazis did look pretty sharp, by and large.
