Hello All,

I am just starting to buy "proper" shoes, and would appreciate some advice please.

First, some background; I have inserts (one flat & one built up) to even out the length of my legs, and so am restricted in which shoes will fit me.

First of all, no oxfords will fit -- my work shoes have to be derbys. I work as a pharmacist in UK publicly-funded healthcare, and only my head of department regularly wears a suit, so this doesn't matter much.

I found a pair of John White "Regent" black plain-toe derby shoes which fit extremely well. John Whites are less well-regarded on here I believe, partly because they are Blake-stitched rather than Goodyear-welted, but honestly they are such an improvement in my situation.

But to the point of the post: I tried on a pair of Loake Nash 2 shoes which felt very good, but are so similar in appearance to the Regents that there seemed little point in getting them at this stage. These were from last 3625 in G width fit, so my question is -- does this help in identifying other lasts or styles across the Loake or other ranges which may be a good bet for me?

3625 Loakes available include the Badminton 2, which is a derby brogue so I will try it when I can but it is F fit.

Sorry for the rambling post but you can see the background is relevant. Any thoughts would be a real help.

Thanks,
Paul

PS My last option is to have shoes made which accommodate the lift so I can do without my inserts, but that's a longer-term costlier solution so I'll try this erudite forum first!

Have you tried any shoes on Loake's 026 last? It should be similar to the 3625 and also comes in G widths. Most of the shoes I know on the 3625 last are chukkas...

Hi soaped,

Thanks for that, I will certainly give the 026's a look. The new Loake Tamar looks especially interesting.....

Of course this is all a guide to take to the shops -- I dare not order online given my shoe history

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
