I've heard that you shouldn't wear loafers with a suit + tie. Are all slip-on shoes considered loafers?

Generally speaking, loafers are moccasins while slip-ons are of the numerous other constructions, just w/o laces.

The "rule" is no loafers with suits. With sportcoats and other casual clothes they are fine.

I probably wouldn't worry much about breaking this rule if the right loafers were paired with the right casual-looking suit.
