Loafer questions

Let me start by saying hi! I've been a long time lurker and I have alot to learn--so here I am. I have recently started building my shoe collection and have a question about loafers. I have never owned a pair and would wear them on casual days at the office mainly. When I was trying on a pair I noticed that a good bit of sock was showing because my pant leg is so slim. Is that normal, or is that because due to the slim trousers? And is that okay?

It was the AE Montecito

Thanks in advance!

I just picked up a pair of AE loafers as well, I wear them all the time with straight leg/slim pants which as you say ends up showing some sock. I personally like the look, it's definitely more casual and it gives me a chance to show off some not-so-subtle socks.

Does this make it "acceptable"? I have no idea but I like the look.

Welcome, both of you to Styleforum.
Penny loafers and other loafers can be enjoyed barefoot or with socks. If you choose to wear socks, then make sure they are thin ones.
Also be sure the loafer fits snug but not tight and definitely not loose as they tend to stretch over time.
They may stretch a little or even up to a half size larger. Loafers made of thin leathers will, ofcourse stretch more (example- Bally)
than those made of substantially thicker leathers (example-Allen Edmonds, Alden, etc). That has been my experience anyway.
