I travel quite a bit and when I'm on the road I do not bring along my shoes trees, since they're heavy.

Are there any "lighter" shoe trees available with travelers in mind? I'm on the road two weeks or so a month, so my shoes are only 50% cared for.

You can get the plastic and wire ones which will be much lighter than cedar but probably not nearly as effective. It depends on how long your trips are. I think your shoes might forgive you if you are only gone for two or three days?

Yep two or three days, but they're LONG days and I feel bad when I put my shoes back in my luggage unloved. I'm unfamiliar with the plastic ones, I should check them out.

I found this to be the best for me. Although I do not like the plastic trees, they are more economical in therms of weight...for short trips only, of course.

Ikea has some shoe trees with a wire spring and plastic ends.

They aren't on the same level as cedar trees but they cost $.99 a pair, weigh nothing, and pack easy.

In googling them, I found a thread on the fedora lounge where people took issue with the fact that they don't fill out the heel--this is not really an issue. The springs are nowhere near strong enough to have any effect. I don't store my good shoes in them, but I have a few pairs that I will travel with and sometimes will stuff into a pair of shoes when I ride my bike to work (to cut the weight and keep them from getting crushed in my bag by accident)

I use these too. Works well for what they are intended to do.

Travel Trees These actually appeal to me. You still get cedar at the toe but you cut down on weight with a plastic heel.

Why don't you stuff your shoes with newspapers? That's a time-honoured practice that is far better than nothing. Also, you can stuff them with rolled-up socks, etc, which also makes for smarter packing if you travel with more than one pair.

This.

Travel every week, and the day's newspaper and socks serve better than anything else.

Berlutti has some amazing light plastic trees. You can buy them or they give them to you when you have your shoes refinished. They are the best ones I have found for travel.
