you were expecting respect for fellow humans in a thread titled 'favorite putdowns'?

No, not at all. But if we have all of these insults aimed at gay men, why no racial, ethnic, or religious slurs? Surely some of those would be ultimately insulting to the right person. But they simply are not acceptable. Yet gay-bashing is. I think that needs to change.

We have had racial slurs posted here already, not offended by those then?

I haven't seen any--my fault. And you have obviously missed my implication that, yes, they are offensive. "I think that needs to change," means that I think people should view insults to gays as being every bit as offensive as racial or religous slurs. b

You have a point, but it's a matter of interpretation.

In terms of sheer insult potential, male sexuality makes an excellent target because it's highly insulting regardless of orientation. It's equivalent to insulting penis size, which is relatively juvenile and harmless and can be amusing as well.

There's little harm in trotting such insults out for display in a spirit of humor.

As an expression of genuine hatred it is indeed objectionable.

Yeah, I'm kind of regretting starting this, and was blindsided a bit by the anti-gay stuff.
My sense is that it's not seen as such - but unfortunate nonetheless.

Slurs of that sort (anti-gay, etc) are so cheap that they don't merit mention IMHO. Whatever happened to creativity, decorum, and the artful insult? Specifically tailored insults appropriate to the situation at hand?

When you're on the road and the person ahead of you is driving slowly, do you tag them as "loser" or "sunday driver"? When your boss is counting your paperclips and holding spare pens in a locker, "Micromanager" or "Bean Counter" really fits the bill. How about the fool abusing his audience with powerpoint? "Clown".

Frankly I have avoided vulgarity for a long time, since I see it as the sign of an underdeveloped vocabulary. Of course I make exceptions when I am getting static from a f-----g computer!

I hate to be the wet towel here but the homophobia in this thread is staggering.

Yeah, you're right, and I for one apologize for contributing to it, although I should probably blame Aristophanes.

Actually I meant to say this too. Just thinking logically about the best way to insult a guy, sexuality is a prime target. Many many men are mortally offended if you suggest they are gay. Unfortunately it also perpetuates the hatred. It's a double-edged sword. And of course if you want to offend a black guy... But we still would never accept that.

^ Provocateur! [IMG] Hmmm... tone can change any term into an insult. Or any insult into a term of endearment. Thank mod for emoticons.

I beg to differ. There's a difference between insults relating to "sexuality" generally, such as penis size insults, and insults that are considered to be insults because of an implication about the subject's sexual orientation. Saying that such terms insulting "regardless of orientation" makes sense only if one believes - and I understand you do not - that it is equally bad to be actually gay and to be mistakenly "accused" of being gay. For example, insults that question someone's intelligence may well have "sheer insult potential" regardless of the subject's actual intelligence. But that's only because being stupid is generally considered to be a bad thing.
