Agree on different markets for Glaser (sturdy) and AiP (luxury), but they're interesting reference points for the area. I'm sure there are other options out there too that I haven't come across. IMO the sub $1000 category as it stands now has to be La Portegna or maybe Want les Essentials. I'm still using a Margiela tote at the moment though, as I don't have as formal needs.

Came here due to following the manbag-thread. Soft briefcase and portofolio looks great! As a neightbour from Stockholm I'm a bit curious how and from where shipping will take place?

    @rach2jlc
Thanks for your advice about building a sustainable manbag business. You are absolutely right: making well-constructed, timeless bags for men is definitely not the recipe for repeat customers.

We thought about whether we should raise prices to ensure that each acquisition gave a higher return, but ultimately we stuck to our guns: we wanted to keep our prices as low as possible so that we could meet a very significant unmet need that many of us share.

We're betting that the accessibility of our products will be a more important driver for our business growth than extra margin.

Additionally -- and very importantly -- If all goes well with this Kickstarter campaign, we will launch a women's collection in early 2015. We believe this will really contribute to the health of our business, as women have very different purchasing behaviour from men. ;)

Manbag thread: Jenn and I have spent countless hours reading that thread -- that thread is the single most important manbag resource on the internet. You can quote us on that!

Will there be a cognac option for the messenger and satchel? Also, maybe a leather strap option for the messenger?

Damn, bags made out of supple 1,8-2,0mm leather AND for less than 500$

These will sell out so fast if the construction is solid

Excellent; I think you guys have the right outlook, the right planning, and the skills (and smarts!) to make this work. You've definitely done your homework and have looked at it at all angles. Can't wait to check out some of the products when they are ready.

It'll be fun to read this thread in 3-4 years after you guys have hit it big and are too famous and busy to talk to us forumites (haha j/k!) We can get to e-namedrop you and say "remember when." :)

ps; I've also subscribed to the newsletter and "liked" you on facebook. I don't "like" much, so you join the ranks of Ozu films, Simone de Beauvoir, Jasper Johns, and Bell's "Two Hearted" ale.

Might I suggest a duffle bag or two for future options to expand your product offerings? One smaller one geared as a daily carry all and one larger bag for travel.

I could also see a slightly larger brief around 4 inches wide with two main zippers compartments similar to the Fat Carter from La Portegna.

Edit: On the newsletter too now.

The bags look great. Love the soft briefcase in cognac.

Agree with the duffle bag idea above. Something I would be interested in I think.

alternatively to a duffel bag, i'd love to see a double wide version of your soft briefcase - could double as a clandestine gym bag in that case. that is really what I am looking for :)

Am thinking of going for a cardholder as a wallet replacement since I do only carry few cards and little cash with me anyways.
As far as I know Euro bank notes are among if not the biggest currency in the world.
I would like to fit once folded 50 Euro notes in one side of the cardholder.
Judging from the measurements on your site the cardholer/pockets are not deep enough.
Would it be possible for you to produce a cardholder with enough space between the two card pockets to fit folded 50 Euro notes (70mmx77mm)?

Agree with those who mention a slightly wider soft briefcase. I didn't see it in your offerings, but you might also consider a zip-top reporter style bag (basically a messenger but without the flap). I actually HATE flap messengers for my own use; that flap is always getting in my way. A zip top easy access reporter bag is my "go to" cross-body/shoulder bag.

Next, I didn't see your color offerings, but I'll also throw out there that gray is probably my favorite color for a manbag. It goes with EVERYTHING. Lots of brands are realizing the wonder of gray and are offering it in addition to the usual blacks/browns.

Once you get established and moving along... a limited/special seasonal color or pattern on an already established product might also be a nice way to get publicity/interest without having to risk a lot of money. Your factory already has the patterns; all you'd have to do is get your tannery to dye it. Margiela, for example, did those AIDS tees in a different color each year and got people to collect them. The soft brief done in a special color that is only done for one season could be the same. It would also give a reason for those who love your bags and have the "classic" ones in brown/black also to splurge yearly to get the interesting seasonal ones.

These could be in the standard leather you already have and with the same hardware, but perhaps just play with the colors or some slight (easy) variation. Different stitching color, different leather color, different lining, etc. I would NOT play around too much with exotics; I remember Lambertson Truex used to do an occasional $30,000 alligator bag as a seasonal "WOW" but it always ended up in deep discount unsold at "OFF SAKS." I imagine they thought it would get a lot of publicity but really I just think it was a waste of production $$$. Let's face it... if I'm in the market for a $10,000+ bag... I won't be shopping with Linjer. Same as LT. I'll go buy Hermes or (better yet) have it made bespoke.

I'm sure you've already considered all of this... I'm just throwing that out there as food for thought!

Pardon the bad pictures, but by "reporter bag" here's sort of what I mean:
