one very unscientific theory - there was a nice sized period in the US when educated people thought that it was classy to speak french. some of them would even go to resteraunts in atlanta with their american friends and speak french........
I am actually serious - it could have just been an appeal to snob appeal, or even a designer who knew some french but no latin and wanted it to look "classy"
