light brown fade

what is it that makes a pair of jeans get a brown-ish fade as apposed to white?

...the color of the weft yarns. Ecru weft will yield a brownish fade.

The brown cast in that case is a calcium carbonate varnish resultant from the microorganisms Lichenothelia and Rhodococcus.

Basically, fungi and bacteria.

Don't wash your clothes for extended periods of time and let them get moist in an enclosed environment. If you've ever been traveling and stored dirty clothes in, say, a trash bag until you could get to a washing machine, you've probably run into the same phenomenon.
