A good relationship makes you able to accomplish more in your life IMO.
+1.

For me, in order:

Getting into aviation. I already knew what I wanted to do as a career by the age of 15. I love it.

Joining the fire department. Gives me a chance to push myself and be a part of the community in the process.

Not changing myself for girls. I realize that I could always change myself to fit a specific girl's personality but it's never worth the trouble.

There are to many to enumerate. After 57 years one can't be alive without changing a thing or two. The most dramatic for me:

1. Leaving a military career for civilian life.
2. Returning to aviation after working on on MBA and flying a desk for four years.
3. Deciding to concentrate on musical, philosophical and spiritual pursuits and using the insights to better guide my life.

Oh don't be. Divorce can actually be a great healer, if one lets it. Having been divorced once myself I can answer why they are so expensive. Because they are worth it!

1. Getting divorced. It's tremendously empowering to recognize in a visceral way that being in a bad relationship, or even the wrong relationship, is worse than being in no relationship at all (i.e. Life is too short to take **** from anyone). It almost makes the pain of 7 years in a lousy marriage worthwhile. Almost. 2. Committing to a spiritual makeover: becoming an active church member, investing time in myself rather than only my career, doing more community service, learning to celebrate the best in people, including myself (i.e. deciding what's important to me and spending time on the important stuff)... 3. Committing to a physical make-over: seeing an osteopath regularly to improve my posture and get rid of back/hip pain, stretching daily, lifting weights 4-5 times a week (and thus gaining 20-25 lbs), dressing well... I wish I'd been wise enough to do 2 and 3 some 20-25 years ago, but at least I "get it" now.

Leaving home to live a fully independent life in other countries (London first, then NYC for the last 7 years)

Committing to my wife (beyond any potential cultural, religious and family issues). She's made me a much better man (I know... you should have seen me before!

I'll second that.... but cutting back drinking on the weekend to 2 drinks a night also helps. Cut the booze and the rest of the diet/fitness dilemma works itself out. Alcohol is only good for you if you already have heart disease.

The "drink to make others more interesting" thing stops working after a while.

I have a motto about my drining martinis. Martinis are like women's breasts. One is not enough and three are too many!
