Life without loafers?

How important are loafers to your wardrobe?

  1. Critical. Without loafers, I would lose the will to live.

I've been saving up for a pair of C&J Mertons, but since I rarely wear the loafers I already own, I'm now thinking about putting that money toward other articles of clothing.

To tell the truth, I tend to feel a bit unshod in loafers and prefer the solid heft of thicker-soled lace-ups underfoot. I'm wondering, in fact, if a well-dressed man needs even a single pair of loafers. (And if he doesn't need them, why would I?)

Please take the poll so I can see where other Forvm members stand on the issue.

I like a pair of Suede loafers to slip on with jeans when going casual.

Also, if you've been wishing/saving for a while, that craving wont go away once you've bought something different. You'll still end up buying them, but in another 2 years or what ever. Might as well get them in Jan (sales!!!!!) and then sell them on in 6 months time if you don't get the right amount of joy.

Not a wardrobe staple imo, but they can be convenient for a quick outing.

I never wear them. Have one pair left, and they sit in the closet. For slip-ons, I much prefer chelseas.

I don't have anything against loafers on other guys, but I've never seen an outfit that I thought would really benefit from loafers and loafers alone. Other styles will do as well.

If you don't like 'em, don't buy 'em, regardless of what anyonne else thinks. They'll just end up unworn.

One pair I haven't worn in two years.

If you want to dress more informally, boots or suede derby would be interesting.

I have three pair. One is a burgundy pair of standard Bass penny loafers for quick runs to the grocery store, etc. The second is a chestnut pair of SAS (old folks shoes) that serve well on days when I'm running frantically late but need to be on my feet for 8+ hours on a tile/concrete floor.

Then there's my horsebit Ferragamos. :inlove: People either love them or hate them when I wear them.

I usually wear one of the three pair once a week.

If you already have loafers you do not wear then your money might be well spent on other shoes. I do not have loafers now, but am waiting for a pair of Alden suede loafers, so I can have one pair in my collection. I got suede, since I am sure I will wear them only in casual settings.

Couldn't live without loafers. Work in a casual environment and I grew up preppy. Pennies and tassels as far as the eye can see. Just started wearing chukkas and I like them, but nothing beats a good pair of shell penny loafers or alligator drivers.

Couldn't live without loafers in the Atlanta summers. I must admit I'll even wear them with suits sometimes. Even though I know I shouldn't.

I've had a pair of Sperry suede penny loafers for about 30years. My favorite casual Friday shoe, sans socks of course.

True story, aside from some wool socks I wear with Bean boots and white athletic numbers, I didn't own a pair of socks until about a month ago... :D

Yeah but you drink from your shoes. We've come to expect such slovenliness from you. :fence:

Tipple up another loafer full of scotch for me, would you please?

Poor thing! It's not easy when your screen name is Bourbonbasted and girls throw up on your shoes.

I guess I could be nicer to you...................................................................
