Letting groomsmen pick out their own suit/tux?

I'm getting married this summer.

Curious to hear your thoughts on having my groomsmen wear the same style suit/tux as me vs. just giving them a color to wear and letting them pick out what they like?

Thanks.

Select exactly what you want them to wear. It is your wedding not a time for them to express their own personal taste and style.

If you want ideas just go to The Knot.com and look for pics.

Good luck!

I'd find it pretty silly if the entire groom's party didn't have a cohesive look.

my sisters wedding is coming up in 2 months and they opted out of tuxes for the groomsmen. At first I was like "Cool"! Now I don't own a proper all black suite, so me as all the groomsmen had to go out and buy the suites. So 600 later, I own a black suite worthy of my sisters wedding. Not that it wasn't nice to get a new suite but in retorspect I would have rather only had to plunk down the 1xx for rental. Depends on your group but you may or may not be screwing them by not doing tux rental.

At my good friend's weddings, the wedding party was asked to wear dark suits. We all turned up dressed well--some in dark gray and some in dark blue--and I thought we looked good together in the wedding pics. It was a day wedding in the spring fwiw.

at my wedding I gave my groomsmen the suit fabric and it was up to them to have it tailored. I also supplied them the ties and asked that they wear a white shirt. not the best idea imo but it worked for me.

I just told my guys to wear a black suit, and I am supplying the shirts (from lands end) and the ties.

Don't let the common practice of bridezillas dictate your own wedding. Read Manton's address to wedding planners (excerpt below): I suppose this is good a place as any to make a point that needs to be made. There is no need for the groom, his best man, and his ushers to match in every respect from neck to toe. In fact, it looks silly. Take a look at pictures from very elegant weddings in prior years, and you see that in fact the wedding party does not match.

Among its other problems, all-matching wedding parties just scream “rented clothes!” Certainly if the dress code is morning coat, then everyone in the party should wear a morning coat. But shirt, tie, vest, etc., can and should all be a little different. After all, we men are not robots.

if it were me, I'd not only have them the same suit/cut/tailioring I'd have them tie their ties the same way. Its kind of weak on wedding photos to have discrepancies..you can tell. rented tuxes are pretty bad though. they should all look like robots.

although it'd be funny if you just let them wear anything they want to.

My fiance put it this way... "When girls are 9 or 10 they start to dream about their wedding day. Boys think about poop and pee."
