I've seen people do that kind of stuff for bagels. It is impressively nerdy to do it for drinking (or coffee).

I have an unlimited supply to purified water at work. Maybe I could play around with it, call it a chemistry experiment. :D

Distilled water or water without some amount of solids dissolved in it isn’t great for coffee extraction: you need a little bit to help the extraction out. The part where everyone’s different is how much TDS you need. There’s also a company making water additives for coffee that takes some of the annoying labor parts out of it: https://thirdwavewater.com/

They’re pretty open about their recipe, so it’s more of a convenience thing.

Curious what people think of the Ember smart mug. I think @A Y hates it. James Hoffman included it this past Christmas in his gift guide, and he gave it a good review the year before (while also admitting it's kind of stupid).

The main thing I don't like about the design is the charger, although I suppose that's inevitable unless you go to batteries, which seems wasteful.

I don't know. I do kind of like hot coffee and I often get distracted. $100 is a lot for a mug, but it's not too much. Design is nice.

Thoughts?

Why do you hate everything?

My parents have one of those NIB. They got it through a casino giveaway promotion. They asked me if I wanted it and I chuckled.

Also, to be honest, I was perusing SF on my phone at the gym and thought you had posted the query to the random discussion thread.

I think if you need coffee to be piping hot then just grab an insulated mug and sip as much as you can before it gets too cold. leaving the coffee out for so long will release a lot of the flavour compounds and make it stale. So essentially you'll be drinking a hot cup of stale joe.

what are the best cures for an office that has a bad coffee setup. I’d prefer not to go out regularly, though their Is a convenient Gregory’s and Blue Bottle.

I’ve considered aFrench press, pour over as well as an aeropress.

There maybe other good options in unaware. I assume most is a trade off between continence and quality.

The thing about the Ember that’s different than an insulated mug is that you can set a temperature it will maintain. Insulated mugs will often maintain a temperature that’s too hot to drink and you have to wait forever before drinking or drink much slower than you’d like. I still don’t like the Ember, mostly for other reasons, but it does solve a problem.
