Eh...while I agree that bartenders are in no particular position to be uppity, I feel that the general contempt that people(and particularly wealthy people) exhibit towards service industry folk in general is appalling. Your attitude exemplifies this - you pretty clearly seem to think that bartenders are menials there to serve you, and not actual people. I'm not saying you have to tip more than $1 or whatever, I'm saying have respect. If you do and this was just an off-the-cuff comment, nevermind.

If every American had to work a service counter job for 6 months or a year, this country would be a better, more courteous place.

Okay...how often do you go to a bar and sit there during the quiet hours and shoot **** with the bartender?

A bartender outside of the bar is an actual person...behind a bar he is there to serve the patrons of the bar.

Also...when I refer to bar I typically mean a crowded dive on the LES or a huge gay club with thumping music...not exactly the place where you can get chummy with the wait staff.

+1 Out of curiosity, did anyone actually answer the original question? The drink was originally a shooter that became a "martini" or preferably, cocktail. two versions: The Shot 1 1/2 oz vodka Juice of lemon wedge (1/8 lemon) and an additional lemon wedge Ice Finely granulated sugar Rocks glass Pour vodka into shaker cup, squeeze the lemon into the cup, and add ice. Shake it like it was Tina Turner and you were Ike. Pour sugar onto a plate, wet the rim of a glass and dip it into the sugar, running the whole of the rim around in the sugar. Strain drink into glass, serve with lemon wedge. The Cocktail 2 oz vodka Juice of a lemon wedge (1/8 lemon) and an additional lemon wedge Ice Finely granulated sugar Cocktail glass Repeat instruction above and give the drink to your girlfriend.

I was reading through classic cocktail recipes today and it turns out I'm a lot classier than I ever thought. When people screwed up their faces at me and said "I can't believe you're mixing those...that's disgusting" my response used to be "shut up, I like it." Now it can be "You poor uncouth fellow! I'm making a _____"

Presbyterian: Whiskey, Soda water, Ginger Ale
Rob Roy: Scotch Whiskey, Vermouth, bitters

Although I'd quite prefer a Presbyterian without the Ginger Ale. Hmm. I guess that just makes it whisky and club soda, which is fine by me.

I always had a lemon drop served as a wedge of lemon dipped in sugar and a straight shot of vodka. Drink the shot, suck on the wedge.
