sorry for all the questions, but i'm new to the forum.

i recently bought a form-fitting hugo boss suit that has real narrow legs. i'm tall and thin so it is actually very flattering. now i'm wondering if i should take all my suits to the tailor and have the legs narrowed. a few months ago i bought a custom made (bespoke around here i guess) suit from Tom James (not sure if people are familiar with this company) and I actually had the tailor narrow the legs. however, in light of the hugo boss suit, i now think that it might look better if they are further narrowed.

i'm a lawyer so i dont want to look like i work at Express, but at the same time, i really like the way a form-fitting (but not nut-hugging) suit looks on my body. i've always had my jackets fitted snugly, any reason not to take the pants in??

all opinions appreciated. i dont want to spend money so i can look like a schmuck.

Narrow trouser legs are quite chic. They go in and out of fashion, but are always stylish IMO.

There've been reports from regulars here having their trouser legs narrowed with great success. Above all, make sure your inseam falls at an appropriate place for how narrow you get 'em, and don't get them too extremely narrow or high up for your job.

You can narrow the legs on a pair of trousers to a degree. After a point, they narrowness of the legs will be out of proportion with the fit of the trousers through the seat and hips. Have your tailor pin the trouser legs while you're wearing them to make sure they look ok before you have the work done.

Go for it. IMO, a suit should reflect its wearer's shape, assuming you're in physical shape to do it. While you're at it, have the hems taken up so there is minimal break over your shoe, which will make your profile look a little more well-proportioned (and show off your good taste in shoes). Note how the one on the right with a lot of break makes the foot look bigger.

I'm tall and thin and my tailor recommended *widening* the legs of my trousers from the knee down so I would look heftier. I checked on the web and found a "rule of thumb" stating that trousers should be wide enough at the ankle to cover 2/3 of your shoe. This agreed with his suggestion, so I let him do it, liked the result, and had several more pairs widened. Of course, this is the conventional, conservative view and you are free to disagree if you want a more fashion-forward look. I'm also 6'3" 175 lbs. (after a year of dedicated weightlifting put on 15-20 lbs.), so I'm always looking for ways to look heavier (i.e. more proportional).

thats exactly what my tailor did for the custom made suit. after i told him the legs were too wide for my taste, he narrowed the upper leg, but left it wide(er) from the knee down.

i'm gonna test the waters, and take a pair of pants for a suit i'm not crazy about to my tailor tomorrow. worst case scenario (the pants are way too tight) and i can dress up like Bruno from the Ali G show next halloween.
