leather splitting on heal - anything I can do?

on the left shoe, you can see some visible splits in the leather on the heel area. 3 of them, although the one in the middle is hard to see do to flash.

anyways, these are nearly vintage shell loafers that I really love, so would like to keep them for a while.

but I assume these splits will just get worse as I wear them? anything I can do?

You could have a cobbler add some stitching to reinforce the current stitching. This should keep it from getting worse. I've never had it done, but I've seen it done.

The best route would probably be to wrap a thin piece of leather over the top and then, as rebel said, put a line or two of stitching for reinforcement.
