Leather Scrape on Briefcase

Noob here, with a question. I'm looking at this leather bag on eBay, and the seller posted several pictures, including this one which shows a "wound" (his word). I contacted him to get some more info, but his communication skills in English seem limited. This is an otherwise beautiful and expensive briefcase, and I'm kind of stumped concerning what the damage is, as I thought leather was thicker than this. This looks more like thick paint sprayed over a cloth matrix (and then scraped off). Anybody have any experience with leather like this? Thanks---

Seller finally sent pictures of the scrape showing the whole side of the briefcase to put it in context. Interestingly, though the title of the item says "black leather briefcase," the 3 pictures are named canvas1, canvas2 and canvas3, which is what the scrape actually looks like. Guess I'll pass.

It's a Dunhill, for anyone who cares to look it up.
