Leather Jackets: Post Pictures of the Best You've Seen/Owned?

I think the color natural veg tan leather turns into is fantastic.

FWIW I'm not inherently against (and even own) a number of things made of undyed leather. The above jacket looks fine. I expect yours looks good too. Others I've seen look a flaky sunburn. A lot of what some people perceive as 'patina' on undyed veg tan leather is actually damage. (Undyed Chromexcel holds up much better than most, because the oils and fats that are packed into the hide keep it hydrated.)

I've just reached the point where the trend (and myth) around "natty" leathers has blown up so much that I recoil from it in most cases. For instance, I've encountered many people who believe only undyed veg tan leather can age/patina, because they've seen so many items marketed as such.

I recently encountered something hilarious (and a bit disturbing) in a clothes chat. This guy talked his girlfriend into giving him thousands of dollars to order a "natty veg tan" iteration of a Japanese kindergarten girls' backpack– he asked Japanese friends if they could proxy it and never picked up on the fact that their polite refusals were also their way of advising him against ordering a bag type associated with prepubescent children.

This is in addition to tons of other expensive "natty veg tan" products he's talked her into getting him, while the ungrateful freeloader mocks her lack of "style" (for wearing normal clothes, instead of chasing this obsession herself.) At least show some respect to the person making your wardrobe possible.

So then it's just a question of whether you're going to wear it enough to develop a patina. FWIW, I have a natural veg tan leather wallet and found that you can hasten the process using Obnauf's LP. But it still takes a while to get a real patina, and that's with a wallet in my back pocket all the time, having gone through that for years. Not sure I wear any of my leather jackets enough to get that sort of patina.

Yeah exactly this. I don't know if I'll wear it because I don't really have a baseline. But the alternative is eternal regret…

I wonder if the specific leather can make a difference too.

I got a wallet from Eastman about a year and a half ago in the 'Havana' (mid tan, so not undyed or "natural") veg tanned WarHorse leather they use for the Werber 1729 jacket. It's developed quite a beautiful patina over these months of use.

The WarHorse leather is very robust but relatively thin. Maybe that makes a difference?

same, i never liked it on anything, i remember i tried in m early days on sf being into raw denim and buying a veg tanned belt, ended up selling it. learned through experience.

Those kid backpacks are made with shell, and it's the first time that I hear of them being available in crust state. Interestingly enough I did talk to a Japanese friend about those backpacks and he politely let me know that using one as an adult would be very weird. That seems like a very Japanese thing to me to have a taboo against an object, as I don't think anyone would think I'm a sex offender if my lunchbox was a Thomas the Tank Engine plastic box or something of the sort. The way he was talking about it, using such a backpack would be like I was sucking on a pacifier. Either way, I was asking for my kid daughter and not for myself.

You don't have to be this intense every time about stuff you don't like. Many people don't like naked veg tan. It's kind of a cross between a hobby project and a fashion statement.

I wouldn't think you were a sex offender, precisely, if you kept official documents in a Trapper Keeper decorated with kids' stickers but I would definitely think that it was pretty weird, at a minimum, and I don't think that's a "very Japanese" reaction.

I don't know, Japan has a ton of taboos on everything. It's an ultra conservative country that has a lot of cultural imports that are very weird so we assume it's more liberal than it actually is. Some of the clothing people wear is damn near puritan. Using a landoseru (japanese school backpack) wouldn't weird me out, but those bags are crazy inconvenient and big. Just in case it's not a girls backpack, it's the backpack everyone uses until like middle school or high school I forget.

Also I don't really believe in the whole PATINA IS LIFE **** but I liked the lawrence rug thing, frankly I would have like it better if it had rug in the back too so it matches a grizzly type jacket. I get how patina nerds have ruined a lot by being so religious about it, but it's just some clothing one way or another who gives a ****.

Also that guy who has a girlfriend that gives him money for whatever just sounds like an asshole. I mean at least he isn't asking for cash to feed his heroin addiction or something.
