Sorry I just realized I misread your post. Obviously "up in arms" has a certain element of aggressiveness/confrontation and I skimmed those words somewhat and missed that connotation the first time -- I thought you were saying people shouldn't feel upset if their leathers receive spills/stains.

Personally, if somebody spills something on me at a bar, inside my head I am screaming YOU FUCKER but outwardly I will say "that's okay"/"whaddaya gonna do" and then high-tail it to the nearest cleaning / kleenex-equipped facility. But I certainly wouldn't attack whoever was responsible. My bad on reading comprehension.

It's fine to feel upset. I mean, nobody likes having stuff spilled on them - but there is an appropriate level of upset, and an appropriate level of reaction. A grown man yelling at a woman who weighs maybe a buck twenty soaking wet, and then crying "she ruined it", and frantically dabbing a leather jacket? That's sad on many levels, imo. I mean, it was an accident. If she threw beer on him, then smacked him over the head with a pitcher without provocation, that's one thing. But a busy waitress spilling a glass of wine? It's like "dude, get over it. At least the stain has a story."

Jesus, did this really happen? That's embarrassing for plenty of reasons outside the leather jacket bit. Ugh.

Some people should probably not be allowed in public.

I had an uncle once, very Seinfeld'ish in many ways - he ended up with a tray of ribs on him at a restaurant once. Not his best performance, the aftermath....

i can't deny that I would get slightly pissed if a substance known to produce irreversible stains was splashed/smeared over my coveted leather.. but i guess it's inevitable?

One word: Obenauf's. Prevents stains, and afterwards, darkens the rest of the jacket to hide them. Done and done.
