2: im not the one obsessing over zippers, thats this guy" impolyt_one", who started talking about how shit MRS zippers were compared to YKK and how that brand of zipper strictly denotes quality. i don't care about zippers. as long as they zip they're fine IMO

lmao, when did I ever say anything bad about MRS zippers? You wouldn't be able to find any information on the internet about them anyway.

That weed you are smoking must be some good shit, and I wish I had some too, but I don't and I don't have the patience to spend an hour to shut you down by quoting your last 20 posts in this thread to point out very little you know. I'll just let what you've said thus far speak for yourself, it's really quite enough.

So just to confirm, the current-season Margiela leather jackets are using YKK zippers? Has anyone bought one recently, and can you comment on the quality? Just debating used vs. new, since I don't seem to be able to find any NOS sales of black jackets from the previous season.

I have the black 5 zip with the blacked out YKK zippers from the recent FW collection.
The zippers on the sleeves and opening operate pretty smoothly, but the movement of the zippers on the chest pocket are somewhat jerky. I usually use two hands to operate them; hold side of jacket while (un)zipping. I don't really mind since I never use the pockets anyways...

You're right, I totally wanted to get a ToJ because of the zippers.

LOL, man, there is no marketing ploy, there isn't even marketing.

I'll take a page out of your book here, and say 'why the fuck are we listening to somebody talk about the finer points of leather jacket quality with someone who has Pierre Cardin and the Gap in his sig?'

If anyone can even find any info on MRS zips, you get brownie points for the day. [IMG]
The company is actually MeRaS right? The only stuff I ever found when i did some digging a few months was in italian, so that was kind of a dead end. They're on a pair of my Marc Jacobs boots, and from what I can see Dolce & Gabbana use them often... And that's about all I know. Can I get fraction of a brownie point? [IMG]

ding ding, you actually get half a brownie point or more, because that's more than anyone else would be able to say - the back moldings were changed from 'M.R.S.' to 'MeRaS' just recently as well, not to mention you'd have to have quite the collection of clothing to have happened upon that as they're that rare. Cloak used some M.R.S. zippers as well, but with Lampo being Italian, and Riri being virtually Italian, MRS is not high on the list.
There's no information you will be able to glean on the internet about this stuff - these companies, even Riri, which is established and fairly big, are very old fashioned and still use pro forma carbon copy invoices whenever it comes to sending you anything and it's all snail mail, maybe fax, it's a fucking pain in the ass.

1: its cheap $600 you have a 5 zip that rivals the quality of TOJ and will last 10 years (how do i know? ) because i bought one and i've been happy. haven't had the need to buy another one.

Where? You keep saying this shit but I haven't seen it. Not something that is 10 years old either, something that is brand new. Show it to me in a decent colorway in my size and I'll probably cop.

Seriously, you keep saying buy a $600 5-zip because it will rival ToJ (keep in mind before you were completely convinced MMM 5-zips are far more superior) but you have no idea how ToJ's will last or how it's quality is.

In the vein of that one criteria, yes.

But I should say that I kinda laugh when he talks so much about zippers. I must confess I too never gave too much thought about zippers until I read YKK or whatever in ToJ posts, but then you have to ask, what's all this talk about zippers like YKK is exotic or something. I see them everywhere, and not on exceptional brands or anything.

YKK MAKES ZIPPERS AT EVERY PRICE AND QUALITY SCALE, GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEADS

Holy fuck. SO MUCH FAIL in the last 2 pages it's actually not possible to address all of the stupidity.

    2. So one criteria is the person making the judgement. We trust certain people, as we should. ToJ does not have that customer base with that knowledge base
Well fine, here. I currently have 3 leather jackets. The first is a Yigal Azrouel that retailed at over $4000 (I haven't seen the label make one over the $1.5-2.5k range since). The second is a MMM 5 zip that retailed for $2k or whatever. The third is a TOJ that retails at $700. I have also owned and sold others from back when I weighed more, notably a Marc Jacobs runway bomber lined in astrakhan fur that retailed around $3500, but I'll just leave the comparison to the ones I own now.

On the whole, the Yigal is the most solidly made and the leather, while supple, is unbelievably thick. It is undoubtedly a for-a-lifetime piece that in 20 years will look even better than now (though the knit parts may wear out and need replacing). The tradeoff is that it weighs as much as my other 2 leathers combined so is exclusively a fall/winter piece, and while it manages to be pretty slim considering the insulated vest, it does look sort of like wearing a breastplate. Basically, it is a suit of armor.

The TOJ uses slightly thicker leather than my 5zip, but I prefer the MMM cotton lining. Yes, the ykk's on the TOJ are objectively superior zippers than those on the MMM, to the extent that actually matters to people. The TOJ is, from everything I can gather, objectively a better made item than the MMM, but there's something about the 5 zip cut and the way the leather falls that just makes it look like a second skin. I have a few nitpicks with the TOJ cut which I've pointed out in the thread, mainly the shape of the upper arm.

On the whole, there is not a whole lot to choose among the three of them, though the Yigal somewhat edges out the other two imo.

What TOJ promises is, for an affordable price tag, very high quality materials, good construction, a reasonably modern cut and timeless, not-terribly-edgy designs (though lately the riders have been getting edgier in design, I'm not 100% convinced the cut has kept up). They deliver precisely that. The lamb is quite thick and as soft as anything I've felt. The hardware is as good as or better than anything I have encountered on any clothing (some of the Riri's W+H used to use on outerwear like their shearling bomber in 06 were up there too). The construction seems very good upon first examination but time will tell how it holds up. Plus, you're supporting someone who's actually a part of this forum which does matter to me, at least, in terms of where my money goes.

TL;DR: The upshot of all of this is, speaking with some experience with high end leathers, if Drew ever offers a leather colour I'm interested in, I will order another TOJ.
