Learning to scuba dive - resort vs. CONUS dive school?

Was thinking about learning to scuba dive - either in Florida or taking dive lessons
at one of the better resorts in the Caribbean.

It occurred to me that dive schools in the US would probably be better, safer, etc.
but that would likely be a separate trip - taking dive lessons at a good resort,
like Anse Chestenet in St. Lucia might be a more efficient use of time, money, etc...

Anyone have opinions on which way to go with this?

Thanks!

You should be able to take your classes somewhere local and then just do your checkout dives when you're on vacation. That's what I did. I did my classroom and pool time here in Chicago then check out dives when I went on vacation in Hawaii.

^ Yes that appears to be very common. I went to a class a few months ago - everyone did the closed water dives at home and the open water dives at their vacation destinations.
