Don't listen to anyone, bro. Style is not organic, or something that takes time...style can be purchased at your local J.Crew (JC). Get a navy Pea coat, a pair of Alden Indy boots, one each of jeans, cords, and khakis along with matching polos/sweaters (JC will do the matching for) and you're fucking styling.

I don't think he was asking how to be "styling", and he only used the word "style" once in his question in stating he thinks he has "no style". So .. to the OP .. if you're asking "how to be styling" or "how to have style" .. you're asking the wrong question.
Why does everyone think this is a science? Look at clothes, street snaps, WAYWT, lots of shit and try lots of things and your taste will organically develop.
I think this is the answer to you're question though. To the OP .. you sort of answered your own question. If you don't like clothes shopping when you don't have a goal .. why not start with the goal? Find something you want on here by flipping through the WAYWT (what are you wearing today) thread's, and find stuff you like (doesn't have to be super specific, but like "I like purple gingham"). Then go find it.

It took me awhile to find the style that I really felt was mine. In my early process I felt like I was wearing costumes, But I think i had it down. Even now a few years after I started i still experiment...but when you nail it...you know you do. Also, dont give up... nobodys genetically predispositioned to dress poorly, you gotta learn it.

I'm in the same boat as the OP and from what I've learned so far the biggest thing to learn at first is fit. If you look at how other people dress their shit is almost aways way too big. Get that down and you will look better already.

I moved from the US to Sweden in November of 08, and was doing unpaid work for a large portion of my time here. I was given enough cash to pay rent.

I've had a normal job for 4 months, so I finally have some cash to spend on myself. I will also be back in the US for Christmas, where it will cost about 40% less or even cheaper for just about everything that I'd want to buy. I'm trying to get back on track.

I don't know what style you are going for and where you live in Sweden, but most European brands are cheaper in Europe than in the US, plus if you buy the european stuff you need before leaving Sweden you can get a vat refund.

and by that same token, I'm also learning that a good fit isn't necessarily "skinny," but just as important is how the cloth drapes to create a good silhouette.

synthese's recent fits are an example of this.

Agreed! You have to wear your clothes and not let the clothes wear you. Most importantly, "you" have to like what you're wearing...you can listen to everyone here, but if you don't like the clothes suggested it will never work for you.
