Layering a chunky sweater under a Sport Coat / Blazer - Size up?

I am a long time reader of this forum however this is my first time posting a question. Having searched the web I found no satisfactory answer to my query. I am looking to layer a thick sweater underneath a melton navy blazer. I gather the crewneck sweater under a blazer is a very trad look, and certainly I am not the first one to think of it, so hopefully someone with experience can help. BTW, when I say "chunky" sweater, think of a typical raglan shetland crewneck or something even more substantial. My actual chest size is 41". I usually take a 40 suit jacket, which gives me a desired 3" ease in the chest. For layering a thicker sweater, should I size up to a 42? That would give me about a 5" ease, probably too loose to wear with anything except the thick sweater underneath as I describe (which I don't have a problem with). Picture this: white OCBD, chunky sweater with wide stripes in brown hues, and navy blazer on top. The OCBD and sweater add a lot of bulk is what I am getting at. The only picture I could find online that comes close to what I visualize was this:

I think this combo looks quite good. Would I have to go up a size from normal in a sports jacket to achieve something similar?

I wouldn't attempt this ever. Chunky knit under blazer usually ends up with you looking like the Michelan Man. The model in the photo looks good but photos =/= real life. You will look stuffy, huge and really disproportionate. Go for a button down + thin cashmere crewneck + navy blazer instead.

Thanks for the input. I'm on the fence about it myself which motivated my posting on the forum. Incidentally I own a few wool casual jackets, a navy pea coat, filson mackinaw, etc. which would be an easy stand in for the blazer. However the blazer is something unconventional to layer on top. I am still toying with the idea but am starting to think you have to be tall and lanky to pull it off (I am neither)
