Laura Bush to publish memoirs before President George W Bush

"Mort Janklow, who represented Ronald Reagan, whose wife Nancy also published her memoirs, said: "The wives of presidents generally write books that have a greater public interest. Wives usually write from a personal point of view - instead of talking about government policy, they talk about when the dog came to the White House and had to be paper-trained. Husbands usually try to rewrite history."

Asked how long President Bush should wait before trying to sell his own life story, the wily agent joked: "30 or 40 years might be good."

I will buy W's memoir when ever it comes out. Love the guy, think he is a great man and given a tough 8 years, did an honorable job upholding the office. Can't wait to hear some of the behind the scenes stuff.

I find myself both agreeing and disagreeing with athletic's post. I find "W" to be a rather likable "Joe" and indeed, voted for him twice. However, I think the reality of "W's" performance in office provides a glimpse of how the Presidency would operate, with "Joe Six-pack", rather than Joe the diplomat, in office. His memoirs will be a fascinating read but, the value will not be in the literary background material provided but rather, in the glimpse into what goes wrong when an administration systematically crushes out any dissenting opinions. A Democracy thrives on honest and vigorous debate, not on one-man's opinion (Dick Cheney's) being forced down all others throats! We lost that quality and the benefits of same, in the present Administration.
