Should one remove collar stays when washing a dress shirt? I'm referring to standard, cheap stays that come with shirts, not mother of pearl or metal ones.

    Thanks,

Yes. If you iron the shirt with the stays in, they'll melt. Since you have to remove them anyway, remove before laundering and eliminate the possibility of any damage.

When you dress you put them in and when you undress you take them out. If you plan to take a taxi back to your place at 6am you can leave them in while undressing otherwise you should take them out.
