Latin sucks.

Had my first day of what is a semi-advanced Latin course today. I did not know what was going on. I actually laughed at one point.

I think I'm just going to do one of those intensive surveys over the summer...in a different language, of course! Italian and German sound nice...

Haven't had to do Latin since pre-GCSE (16) but yes, I remember it sucks, but remember you will gain "An understanding of the underlying principles of the modern European languages" so it will be totally worth it.

This made me laugh. Did you not take the pre-reqs?

Latin was very helpful to me in learning vocab in general, and while learning other European languages.

I have the pre-reqs. Problem: I have credit for 102 from a high school course I took. This was in 2005/2006. 103 is starting with stuff that is more advanced than my senior year high school coursework. I am in way over my head. After some breathing exercises, I feel a bit better. The real issue is that regardless of what I do (drop down to Latin 102 or start a new language, my only options) I'll be here for a quarter longer than I had originally planned. So instead of graduating next March, I would graduate next June. It is just frustrating/annoying.

Yeah, it is actually handy in retrospect, but at the time...

Or you could just overload during one of the quarters to get the language out of the way. It's a bit more work but at least you're out of there a quarter earlier. Of course if they aren't offering it....

Yeah, that is the issue. Even if I downgrade to Latin 102 for this quarter, I'd still be graduating next June because there is no 103 offered over the summer. Damnit.

Latin takes some serious effort. in retrospect, I'm glad I took it and find it gave me some useful knowledge. But working through it really does suck.

I found after my first semester of Latin, the number of hours required to maintain my grades went up steeply. I changed to a beginners IT course which was the doss I expected.

Although I work in archaeology in a country with a lot of Roman remains, I can't say I've ever been in a situation when I've ever needed any advanced Latin knowledge. Basic vocabulary for common find types and architectural elements is all I've ever needed.

However, it must be said I'm sure my vocabulary and understanding of other European languages would be that much greater had I persisted.

My prof made a deal with us that if we showed up every class we wouldn't have to take the final... that's the only way I passed Latin. Try to work something out with your prof, get a tutor, spend time in the language lab with Rosetta Stone (if you can), etc...
