BMW's just announced its latest art car, and it's ... different:

It will be on display in San Francisco's MOMA from September through January in specially-cooled room so it doesn't melt.

The car was then been sprayed with 530 gallons of water over the course of several days to create layers of ice. Do you get it? Water --> H2O --> Hydrogen. Clever.
eh?

Reading up on the other art cars, I must say that this one goes right along with the others. My favorites are Sandro Chia (he painted faces so that the car would "look back" at people looking at it, ingenius) and Ernst Fuchs (He calls his "firefox on harehunt" and has a wonderful explanation of the...work), with an honorable mention to A. R. Penck's you-thought-it-was-just-this-but-surprise-it's-art explanation needing car and also Hockney's inspired use of green.

I wonder how on earth he thought to equate water with hydrogen? This is why we have artists.

Read the blog--a BMW had to die to make this. From the artist: "Our movement in space implies friction: not only wind resistance, but also social, physical, and political frictions." Uh-huh, yeah. Really, the only thing I hate more than bad modern art is the self-aggrandizing bull that bad modern artists seem to spew.

List of past BMW art cars: http://www.bmwworld.com/artcars/ I must say, maybe I'm a philistine, but some of them look like they belong in the backyard of a redneck with cans of spray-paint (e.g. Penck's Z1).

As if I needed another reason to dislike modern art.

This makes the "Bangle Butt" look positively genius.

Andy Warhol's BMW M1 wasn't bad, but the '76 3.0 CSL by Frank Stella was the best imo.

I'll give my vote to the Calder and the Chia. Both look wonderful.

Never been a Stella fan.
