Late night snacks

Being on the college schedule, no matter when I eat dinner, I'm going to be up for anywhere from another 4-6 hours, so a snack before bed is necessary. It needs to be somewhat fulfilling but obviously healthy. Here are some things that I try:

- yogurt (rarely enough sustenance)
- SmartStart cereal
- shake (milk, a banana, and natural peanut butter)
- protein bar

What are some other good late-night snacks? What do you use?

I'll eat a whole meal - snacks don't fill me up that much.

Usually I'll wake up around 10am, eat lunch at 3ish, dinner at 7-8, and a second meal at around midnight, bed at 3-4am.

I love my late-night meal.

Cottage cheese is a great source of protein and very healthy to eat right before bed. I like to eat mine with either pickles or sugar free jelly. mmmmm

Carrots: filling, yet not so filling that you'll feel bloated, and healthy!

An apple, or a pear.

How about keeping a rotisserie chicken around. That way you can just snack on some when the cravings hit.

Peanut butter, Cottage cheese with chopped apples or mandarin oranges mixed in, and hot cocoa with a shot of rum are my midnight staples.

I always have a from-scratch pureed soup in the fridge that I make on weekends. So that's often an option. A chilled vichycoise or avocado soup is always excellent.

I do the same for salads... I'm a huge fan of Le Puy lentils with a dijon vinaigrette and I prepare enough for several servings.

I also have a big bin of mixed spring greens that I'm always digging in to for fresh salads with balsamic vinaigrette.

And grapefruits...

Lastly, raspberry, strawberry, or apple pie with vanilla icecream.

I basically don't eat junk food anymore. Fresh is so much better and you don't feel ****** the next day.

These things all have refreshing tastes, which is important late at night imo.

There is nothing to eat before bed that is better and healthier than a cup of cottage cheese followed by two tablespoons of natural peanut butter.

Try making a stacker of mozarella cheese, tomato slices, and fresh spinach leaves (not the kind in the can); I think it's an Italian dish called something-caprese. Very filling and light!

That's a myth. When you go to bed you are essentially fasting for 6-12 hours. It would be insane to do that while you were awake, right? Obviously you don't want to pig out, but a small meal of protein and some fat for energy preferably EFAs (essential ***** acids) is exactly what you need to keep your metabolism going throughout the night. Some cottage cheese or a protein shake and some peanut butter just like odoreater mentioned is a terrific meal.

I just had a cup of cottage cheese with an apple chopped up, two table spoons of butter, and half a bag of sugar snap peas. Yummy...
