i looked at the site and can't figure out what the service is. i understand you can download songs for a price, but does it cost anything to just listen on your computer? do they have every song or is it limited to music that other users put into the system?

Actually it is neither. You can downaload plugins for Winamp, Foobar, WM etc that can track what artists you are listening toand sends it to a database and puts together your preferences. From there it can match up your preferences with other users and suggest new music. And you can use the free player you stream music acording to what you have listened to.
