If you were going to Las Vegas and wearing a suit, would you:

(a) wear a tie
(b) wear no tie
(c) wear a tie AND sneakers

"c" only I had to pawn the fatte a manos to cover gambling losses. Otherwise "a" or "b".

There may be some men who can pull off the "suit and no tie" look. I've seen a few. I don't think I am one of them. Because of my work, I commonly do wear a suit in Vegas (attending the SHOT Show [firearms industry trade show held in Vegas in most years]), and I invariably wear a tie with it. If I wish to dress more casually, I remove the suit and tie and dress casually. MY general view is if the occasion is dressy enough to warrant a suit, it also warrants a tie!

+1.

I lived in LV for a couple of years very recently and it is not a suit town. So a suit and tie will put you in the tiny minority. But If I wear a suit, I wear a tie.

Having said all that, you certainly can go to LV and leave your suit at home. Even at Wynn's which requires a jacket in most restaurants.

However if you want to dress up you can do so and get no funny looks either. It is an incredibly tolerant town on sartorial matters.

JL, PM me next time you head up and I might be able to meet you there. I just had LV added to my Az territory this week.

Suit and no tie is a great look. I would recommend no tie.

Depends on exactly where you're going and how old you are. Depending on the event, anything from suit with no tie (and dress boots) to a tux with wingtips. Age matters a lot.

At 27, I can definitely pull off the black suit (narrow pinstripes)/purple, red or white silk shirt (two buttons undone)/cufflinks/black dress boots look. I can't imagine my father doing the same, though...

While I did concede in my earlier post that there are men who can pull off a suit with no tie (although I don't rank myself among them), I don't believe that there is anybody who can "pull off" wearing a tuxedo with wingtips. It is simply a gross, unpardonable sartorial incongruity, only a notch or two up from wearing a tux with sneakers!

It depends on the suit and shirt. I think a business looking, boring sack-fitting suit with no tie would say 'convention just let out, let's party' while a sharp trim suit that looks decidedly unstodgy could get away with just about anything.
