Large tie knots are awful

I'm not the most observant person in the world (understatement of the year) but since being on SF, I've been paying a bit more attention to how other people dress. I don't go actively "hunting" to evaluate others' clothing but when I notice something being a bit off (IMO) I'm better able to pinpoint what it is.

Recently I can't help but notice just how bad large and/or loose tie knots look.

I guess there's not much point to this post but thought I'd share. I love you guys!

Mhmm. It looks kind of inevitable when Italian men have large/loose asymmetrical knots with wide ties, but I agree that it just looks stupid when American guys have a huge, symmetrical knot that is wider than the tie itself.

O wow I remember seeing a few weeks ago, some young gentlemen having tied the largest knot ive ever seen. I mentioned that to him and he told me it was a double windsor knot!! Its good you weren't there to experience that or you might have puked in disgust.

I prefer larger tie knots, but I am in the minority here.

I too prefer larger knots but I get the feeling Jumbie's talking about the REALLY large knots (?) which do look out of place.

But I definitely prefer a larger knot (just a full windsor) to the tight little knots that look like you're getting strangled.

Yeah, I don't really mind a full windsor although it's not my personal preference. However, when someone ties a windsor sloppily so that it's not tight, it looks very bad.

If a tie is thick its going to naturally create a bigger knot, let the tie be what it is. I dont understand what is wrong with symmetry either, full windsor is my fav. To me, something odd when you try to look off.

What I don't like is what I call the 'european soccer player look' when they intentionally leave the tie really loose in a post game interview as if to say 'ya, just played, then got some (whoa she was sweet) and had to hurry over to this here interview'.

I quite like the tie loose, pulled slightly to one side, top button undone, if the situation calls for it. No I wouldn't go to work like that, but if I was in a bar or night club and it was hot, I think it looks cool.

Yeah, I don't love the large tie knots, for a while when I was at school they were very much in vouge, and in retrospect everyone looked terrible, fortunately I found them too complicated to bother with and stuck with my FIH. Generally I go with a FIH and sometimes a half-windsor.
What I don't get is if you have a large tie knot is your tie not going to end somewhere in the middle of your chest?

I used to rock the fat footballer knot back in the day. In fact, Tie Rack sold a special tie that allowed you to get a fatter knot even when you tied a FIH.

sigh.

Such a long time ago. I also had a fauxhawk but that's a story for another thread.
