First, thanks to whomever recommended Lands' End recently to me. They have an 'Inlet' [of course, that's outlet to everyone else ;-) ] near me; yesterday I stopped and got some chinos and two blue button down shirts.

One shirt has button-down collars, one does not. Is there a general rule of thumb here with respect to button down collars and ties? Are ties only for non-button down collars?

Thanks again!!

Did they have any of their Tailored Fit stuff, or only Regular/Traditional Fit?

Not sure. But I love the grimace/frustration emoticon. ;-)

Generally speaking, button-down collars are considered less formal, and, with exceptions, are generally not worn with suits. I will wear ties with button-downs but I can't speak for the other people on SF.

You will find yourself in the minority around here, but I am with you. I wear button down collars with ties all the time, especially during the day.

I've seen it done well, but if I remember rightly DocHoliday's mother says don't do it.
