Given the boot last Friday. I'm not sure why, but I expected more than a Friday meeting telling me I'm done when I've worked there 8 years. It's a small company, and they certainly knew this was coming- why do I get no warning?

2 weeks severance. Trying to claim unemployment when your previous employer is deferring your final check is a joke. The system is set up to completely discourage short term unemployment needs. Even though I haven't worked since last week, I am not eligible to claim a week until 4 weeks from now- because my final check for previous weeks of work counts as currently earned income

The ironic part of it all? I got another job yesterday- better company, infinitely better opportunity, better pay. I am ******* lucky- I probably don't really deserve this with the other unemployed talent floating around out there.

All I can say is, thank God for friends that look out for you. Every job I've ever had has come from networking and friends, and that has come thru again for me, in what has been a very bad few months.

The weight has been lifted a little and it feels great.

Great news that you managed to get something good out of a (potentially very) bad situation. Congrats on the new job and the new pay, try not to spend the surplus on clothing!

It's not, no question, but I was humbled by the # of friends and contacts who immediately started sending me leads and recruiter names. If this had not come thru, I would have found something relatively quickly- most likely less $ and not a career advancement, but I would have been happy for the time being.

Oh man, congrats on landing on your feet.
It has been pretty disastrous for some of my college friends that graduated this past June. Another one just got dumped couple days ago and is asking me about law school.
Sucks. At least they coulda fired him earlier so he can get applications in on time.

I've been axed four times. Each time I ended up in a much better position. More money and/or more fun. Always turns out to be a good thing.

Great ending to your story. But do not ever worry so much about other unemployed folks out there when you were "lucky" to get a new job quickly. I know talented people who have been out of work for the longest of times. The job market is brutal. Be glad for your circumstances and look forward. Just be kind enough to offer advice or leads to folks you know in need (if you can).

Good to hear you bounced back quickly. I can't believe you only got two weeks severance for eight years! I was laid off back in March and I got two months severance and I had only been with the company for two years. Anyway, sounds like things worked out in your favor. Cheers mate.
