Lacing Sperry Chukkas

I'm almost afraid to start a new thread but I wasn't sure where this should go. I just received the Sperry A/O Chukka work boot (on sale for $57 from Sperry directly). I love the boot but I'm not sure about the reddish/orange laces. The problem is that they aren't the traditional 360 lacing system, the bottom lace part is purely decoration. I was wondering if anyone has tried to replace the laces on a Sperry Chukka? Would it be possible to put leather laces in and cut a hole through the first eyelet to make the laces functional? Any insights would be greatly appreciated

I said ******* last night and went for it. It took some time and I worked up a light sweat but they turned out great.

As I mentioned in the original post, I was afraid to start a new thread. Everyone bitches about everything around here lately. Sorry to waste your time on ugly shoes. Here's a pic to show just how ugly they are after changing the laces:

I poked a hole through the leather behind the bottom grommet with a knife then used picture hanging wire to guide the laces through the grommets.
