I just bought some boots made out of 'Kudu', which is apparently some kind of cute ram-like animal from Africa. Someone please fill me in on the properties of this leather, special care instructions, etc.

Is it Alden's kudu or the actual kudu?

The leather has been sanded, it's got a velvety "˜nap'.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nubuck

I believe, this particular leather has been treated like (nubuck), but I'm not certain.
Suede (sanded on the flesh side) has a longer nap than nubuck (sanded on the hair side)

Just treat it like any suede or nubuck: brush and possibly use a water-repellent spray.

The texture of this leather is not at all like nubuck.

Then I don't know, contact Alden and ask.

Here is a pair of boots in a "˜shrunken Kudu'
(the leather has been treated in the tanning process to physically shrink, so all the markings get intensified)

Kudu is just a hide which can be tanned in numerous way, so, depending on the process can look differently.

I asked Ron Rider about the kudu boots he sold me. He said that they're regular calf leather that has been tanned with lots of oils. I can't remember all of the details. I was a little disappointed because I have a thing for kudus - they taste good
But my kudu boots are holding up really well. They're my go to travel boot and I beat the crap out of them.

Thank you guys -- I am a little sad that it's not made out of an exotic animal from Africa, but I'm happy to know that they're tough boots that will last without a lot of care.

How do you feel about spending money on non-essential goods during the Covid-19 crisis?

  • I don't want to spend money at a time of economic uncertainty, even if I could afford it.

  • I feel compelled to spend to help small businesses that are struggling.

  • I reduced my budget for non-essential goods and I'm not spending at the moment.

  • Not much has changed for me and I'm still buying stuff I can't afford.
