i just picked up a J crew navy knit tie (my first knit tie, couldn't resist the awesome color and texture). I have a question about how to wear it. I noticed there is no loop behind the wider half to stick in the thinner half. Is this normal? If so, how to you make sure the thinner one stays under?

Also, how long are these things supposed to hang? If I tie it so it reaches my belt the other half is a lot shorter. Is that normal?

My knit ties from Charvet only have a Charvet label on the back and no extra fabric loop. Sometimes, I'll just tuck the shorter end into the label.

However in your case, you could invest in a tie clip and that'll keep the shorter end in place along with making you look cool. In terms of hanging length, mine tend to hit just above my belt by an inch or so.

Knit ties are casual and do not need to adhere to the formality of other ties. Let that shorter end hang loose with the other longer end, it's a nice look and these types of expressions are called an attitude, a way to project a confidence about yourself. However, if it really bothers you, you can stick it inside the placard of your shirt.

Tie clip from Howard Yount!

Then you don't have to worry so much where the inside peice hits (usually too high with standard length ties, in my case)
