Hello all, I just wanted to get some opinions from the community on an issue I would like to take care of. I have a Kiton shirt whose breast pocket I would like to have removed, the shirt is a pastel pink base with navy blue and yellow stripes in a check pattern. My concern with this undertaking are the stitching holes...will there be an obvious trace that a pocket was stitched there. Has anyone had the pockets from their shirts removed? If so, are the stitch holes very noticeable, I know this varies from fabric to fabric and even color to color...please advise. Thanks.

Remove pockets CAREFULLY, then wash and dry shirt. Presto! no visible traces of stitch line.

I remove all pockets from all my shirts where possible. I love the look and feel.

I've had success with poly-cotton, cotton and linen of all weights, weaves and thread counts.

Unpick the sewing from the front always. (I use a miniature pen knife blade to pick and to slice.)

The length of reinforcing stitch on either side at the top of the pocket usually requires a deliberate slice through the length (front), and very careful teasing at the back. It will come away eventually.

Never be forceful in unpicking or pulling. You will minimise distorting the weave of the fabric.

With the pocket off the needle holes will be obvious. Especially at the top of the pocket!

But if you wet the fabric, warm it with an iron and then gently stretch the fabric flat (front down) on the ironing board and massage with your finger over the holes they will gradually disappear. Do a few repeats stretching with the warp and the weave. Wet, iron, massage again if you have to.

You will never know there was a pocket.

I've done this 50+ times and have had only one failure - a shirt which I wore a few times with the pocket and had sunlight fading. The pocket was still visible as a shadow!

I should add that I find this process necessary because straight washing and ironing sometimes doesn't do the job, or at least not on first go.

I removed them quite harshly though. When I'm done I use a damp cloth and press it over on both sides. After one wash, it is 99% unnoticable. Thank God.

not a good idea if the shirt has been cleaned and the color inside and outside the pocket is likely to be slightly different, but noticable.

I'd think twice before attempting this with a Kiton shirt. Their stitching is so fine - there are at least 32 stitches per inch.

+1. Also, their Riva cottons are so fine that I'm sure the holes will remain unlike thicker, more sturdy cottons. I would NOT do this on a Kiton shirt.

I used to hate shirt pockets and now I SWEAR by them.
