Also, the cabinetry made by most custom shops pales in comparison to Balthaup, Boffi or Siematic. This one at least seems to have a philosophy about function.

Just returned from Europe. Spent some time in hardware stores. Picked up some catalogs from a store equivalent to US Lowes. Facisnating the designs they find to make small spaces functional. For all the space in American homes, we waste it.

Bump.

Any recommended sites for kitchen design advice/inspiration? Trying to avoid cute country cottage, McGranite McMansion, or ultra clean modern design.

This might be met with snarky looks, but ikea has some decent designs. I am not suggesting buying one, but you will be able to get some pretty wide ranging good ideas from one of there megastores or online.

I've seen a number of good looking kitchens that use ikea components. You can use Ikea cabinets and get nifty pulls elsewhere--allows you to use Ikea drawer organizers, which are nice.

Ikea shelves and pot racks etc are also perfectly fine and cheap ways to add storage.

We don't need to preserve space because we have some much of it. It's not really fair to compare the two since they are different beasts. If you do want to compare it, compare it to Ikea...which is all over the US.

Yeah, there's absolutely no incentive; thus everything stagnates with stupidity. ~ H
